Dassel Fire Department
When there’s an emergency, the Dassel Fire Department is prepared and willing to help.
In 2009, the department responded to a total of 225 calls. The majority of them, 145, were medical-related emergencies. There were also 19 structure fires, 19 grass fires, seven car accidents, 20 vehicle fires, four hazardous materials spills, and four search and rescue calls, among others.
This year has been busy as well, with 65 calls so far in 2010.
Many of the firefighters have been on the team for several years. In addition, David Grochow and Douglas Bollman are reserve members.
New firefighters in 2009 included Ben Aho and Adam Monson.
The department currently has openings for three more members.
The Dassel firefighters respond to calls in a 125-mile radius, covering the cities of Dassel, Darwin, and Kingston, along with the surrounding townships of Collinwood, Dassel, Ellsworth, Darwin, and Kingston.
One highlight this year was the arrival of the new pumper truck April 26, 2010. The truck is a 2010 Spartan Metro Star custom equipped by Custom Fire of Osceola, WI for $486,000.
The city paid $150,000 down and received a USDA loan for $336,000 for the remainder.
Some of the equipment installed in the new pumper includes a defibrillator, air packs, a specialty chain saw, and upgrades that have been made to nozzles.
